Welcome to the website of my photography. Nature photography is an experience that I love to do and these pictures come from my adventures in photography. As the lyrics of Paul Simon so beautifully state: "I got a Nikon camera, I love to take a photograph".
The Joy of Photography began from the influence of my father Dick Gill. Dick Gill was an excellent Photographer and I can always remember a camera (and usually a really nice one!) around the house. At one point I can remember there being a darkroom in the house and experiencing that first magical moment of developing a print under the red light of a dark room.
Our family (Mom, Dad, my brothers Richard Gylgayton and Chris Gill) often backpacked, camped and traveled across the United States visiting beautiful National Parks and National Forests. Our family experienced America when Route 66 was the place to get your kicks. I distinctly remember visits to the National Parks of Yellowstone and Yosemite with Rangers patrolling on horseback.
Those early travels down America's Highways and Trails provided a base for a love of the outdoors & nature. The adventure of outdoor experiences continues.
When I was in High School my father gave me a half-frame camera that began the joy of taking a picture. I could take 72 pictures on a 36 exposure roll of film with the half-frame. I still have some of those original images. My first Nikon camera was saved up for and purchased in New York City the Photography Capitol of the world.
I have experimented with Black & White, Medium Format, Kodachrome & Cibachrome. I currently shoot both digitally and film with the majority of my work now being done digitally. I find each of them to be a tool to create. I still enjoy the occasional shooting with Fuji Velvia for some "old school" photography.
I have always been influenced and enjoyed the photography of Ansel Adams, Galen Rowell, Eliot Porter & Ed Cooper.
I currently live in Santa Rosa, California in beautiful Sonoma County. Northern California is a wonderful area to live and provides a diversity of photographic experiences for a Photographer. With the coast, desert, mountains and diverse wildlife you are a short drive away from some of the most scenic and wild spots in the world.
Thanks for stopping by.
