Alaska Fall Colors

Alaska Fall Colors is an image captured on the George Parks Highway in Alaska. Alaska Fall Colors turn the landscape into brilliant orange, yellow and reds. It is one of the best times of the year to visit Alaska.

Alaska Fall Colors occurs early, actually more in late summer than in the fall of the year. Alaska Fall Colors also occur quickly and normally only last for a couple of weeks. This Alaska Fall Colors image was taken during the first week of September.

A misty rain was falling on the landscape. The cloud cover provided diffused light and the mist added depth to the warm color of the foliage.

This photograph was taken on a drive on the George Parks Highway. The highway is also known as Alaska Route 3 and is normally called the Parks Highway. The highway was completed in 1971 and was named the Alaska-Fairbanks Highway. The name was changed to the George Parks Highway in 1975. The highway is the main route from Anchorage to Fairbanks. It provides access to both the Denali National Park and Preserve and the Denali State Park. It is named after George Parks who was the Governor of the Territory of Alaska from 1925 to 1933.

Alaska Fall Colors was captured on a drive I took through the interior of Alaska. The fall color of the interior was peaking and provided many opportunities to stop and photograph along the highway. The rain on this particular day would range from a slight mist to a heavy downpour. Between downpours I would step out of my rental car, set up the tripod and capture the beautiful colors of the landscape. The misty clouds would move across the mountain landscape adding a unique beauty to the scene.

Alaska Fall Colors captures the colorful oranges, yellows and reds of an Alaskan fall.
