Cataract Creek Winter Storm was taken during a break between the Pacific Storms that can dump tremendous amounts of rain on the Mount Tamalpais watershed. Cataract Creek was flowing at a tremendous level, water spraying everywhere throughout the hike up Cataract Creek. The ferns and moss in the ravine that Cataract Creek flows through were as green as could be. The sound of flowing water was roaring as I photographed Cataract Creek Winter Storm.
The hike up Cataract Creek is a great hike for a photographer. The hike is steep but there are so many stops along the way to photograph flowing water that you forget about the steepness of the trail. Parking is tight and you should get their early in the day before the crowds can descend on the limited parking. A cloudy day is the best lighting to give you diffused light with long exposures to capture a mystical feel to the picture. It is best to wait a few days after a good winter storm to allow the mud in the water to clear out.
