Chilkat Eagle Flight
Chilkat Eagle Flight is one of my favorite photographs. Chilkat Eagle Flight was photographed at the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve in Haines, Alaska.
The Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve was created in 1982. Chilkat Eagle Flight captures a common sight seen at the Preserve. The preserve protects a critical habitat for the American Bald Eagle. The Preserve protects 48,000 acres of river bottom land of the Chilkat, Kleheni, and Tsirku Rivers where a Chilkat Bald Eagle Flight can be seen.
Chilkat Eagle Flight captures one of many Bald eagles that are attracted to the area by the availability of spawned-out salmon and open waters in late fall and winter. Eagles like the Chilkat Eagle Flight image can fly up to 30 mph and can dive at speeds up to 100 mph. They scan the river bottom lands for salmon that they can either capture themselves or steal from another Eagle.
During the fall congregation that occurs from October to February, up to 3,000 Eagles have been counted at the preserve. Chilkat Eagle Flight is a common sight during this fall congregation.
The Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve is also home to 200-400 Bald Eagles year-round. Over 80 Eagles nests have been counted in the preserve.
The Chilkat Eagle Flight photograph captures a bird that is only found on the North American Continent. A Bald Eagle can have a wing span of 5 to 7 feet. The distinctive white head of the Chilkat Eagle Flight bird is developed at 4 to 6 years of age. Adult Eagles will weigh about 9 to 12 pounds when full grown. Female Bald Eagles are larger than males.
The Chilkat Eagle Flight captures the colorful eyes of the Bald Eagle, eyes that can spot a fish from one mile away.
Chilkat Eagle Flight captures the beautiful aerial skills of one of nature’s most beautiful animals.
