Crescent City Sunrise
Crescent City Sunrise is a photograph I took recently on a trip I took through the Pacific Northwest.
Crescent City California is located in Del Norte County in Northwestern California. It is the county seat and the only incorporated city in Del Norte County. It is nicknamed “The Redwood Gate to the Golden State”. Crescent City is 20 miles from the Oregon border and is the headquarters for the Redwood National Park. Crescent City is named for the crescent-shaped sandy beach located south of the city.
Crescent City is famous for tsunami’s that have hit and destroyed property from earthquakes far away from the city. It is susceptible to tsunami’s due to the offshore geography of the city. The topography of the seafloor near the city has caused tsunami conditions 31 times between the years 1933 and 2008.
The seas around Crescent City are treacherous and dangerous. St. George Reef Light is an inactive lighthouse six miles off the coast of Crescent City built to aid mariners in these stormy waters.
Crescent City is also known for the tremendous amounts of rain that falls on this part of the California Coast. The annual rainfall is 68 inches with the wettest months from October to March.
This Crescent City Sunrise photograph occurred on a beautiful summer morning in the month of September. On the northern edge of the city is a scenic drive that exposes the beautiful coastline of Crescent City. The fog bank was offshore at sunrise on this summer morning and the sunrise striking the fog bank in the background and the beautiful coastal trees provided a beautiful Crescent City sunrise.
