Samuel Boardman State Scenic Corridor

One of my favorite destinations in Oregon is the Samuel Boardman State Scenic Corridor. Located just up the road from California north of Brookings, Oregon.

I view this section of Oregon in the Samuel Boardman State Scenic Corridor to be one of the most scenic sections of the Oregon Coast. It is wild, yet accessible. There are many beautiful camping locations nearby and comfortable accommodations just down the road in Brookings, Oregon.

The Oregon Coast Trail provides hiking opportunities. The trail covers 27 miles of trail through the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor. You hike among 300 year old Sitka Spruce trees with views of natural arches and bridges.

The Pacific Coast Scenic Byway travels through the Samuel Boardman State Scenic Corridor for 12 miles.

Samuel Boardman State Scenic Corridor was named for Samuel Boardman. Samuel H. Boardman was the first Oregon Parks superintendent. He and others felt the scenic beauty of what is now the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor should be preserved.

In 1927 Oregon had 4,070 acres in forty-six small state parks; Mr. Boardman increased the number of parks to 181, and acreage to 66,000. Mr. Boardman felt that if Oregon had sufficient state parks, tourism would experience great growth in business. He was able to influence donors to contribute to the State Parks and for funds to be allocated to the State Parks.

In his 21 years of Superintendent of the Oregon State Parks Samuel Boardman showed a visionary sense of judgment in selected lands to be preserved. His philosophy was to purchase land when it was undeveloped and affordable, and build any necessary park improvements when more funds became available. His vision allowed for one of the most well run State Park systems in the country to now provide excellent services to thousands of visitors.

The Samuel Boardman State Scenic Corridor is not only a beautiful and scenic area, the Samuel Boardman State Scenic Corridor is a great tribute to a conservationist of the Oregon Coast.
