Tundra Color Sunset

Tundra Color Sunset took place in Denali National Park on a stormy fall day. In Tundra Color Sunset the cloudy sky and Tundra shared a magenta color.

Tundra Color Sunset was taken on a photography camping trip to Denali National Park and Preserve in interior Alaska. Camping at Wonder Lake hoping to catch a fall glimpse of Denali. Denali the mountain was elusive on this trip and never made a dramatic appearance. Instead photography time was spent capturing the color of an Alaska Tundra Color Sunset.

Tundra is defined in Physical Geography as a biome where the growth of trees is hindered by the combination of low temperatures and a short growing season. Tundra is divided into three types: Arctic Tundra, Alpine Tundra and Antarctic Tundra. The vegetation that composes these types of Tundra consists of grasses, dwarf trees, shrubs, lichens and moss. Trees can grow scattered throughout the Tundra.

Arctic Tundra is what grows in Alaska and other parts of the northern hemisphere. The soil underneath the Tundra is permafrost. Permanently frozen soil.

As seen in Tundra Color Sunset the vegetation that composes the Tundra turns to beautiful colors in the fall. Red, orange and yellow color covers the landscape. When the lighting is just right it turns to what can be described as a psychedelic experience.

Tundra Color Sunset was taken one evening while camping at Wonder Lake campground. The persistent clouds did not provide the view of Denali, so an evening walk to photograph the tundra was taken. Although the clouds prevented views and photography of “the mountain”, it provided a wonderful diffused light to photograph the Tundra fall color. The Tundra was filled with deep reds and magenta color.

As the sun began to set to the west the persistent clouds that had blocked the mountain began to light up with color. The color deepened to a deep magenta, matching the color of the Tundra stretched across the landscape. And Tundra Color Sunset was captured.
